Life gets busy. Some days, no matter how hard you try, making it into the gym just doesn’t happen. But that doesn’t mean your fitness has to take the day off. One simple tool you can use to level up your workouts outside of CrossFit is a weighted vest.

Why Use a Weighted Vest?

A weighted vest is exactly what it sounds like—a vest loaded with extra weight. By adding resistance to bodyweight movements, you can challenge your strength, stamina, and conditioning without needing fancy equipment.

Here’s why it’s beneficial:

1. Increases Intensity

Adding weight makes even the simplest movement harder. Walking, running, squats, push-ups, and pull-ups all become more challenging, which means you’re building strength and endurance in less time.

2. Mimics CrossFit-Style Training

CrossFit workouts often combine bodyweight movements with external resistance. Using a weighted vest at home is a great way to keep that same feel when you’re not in the gym. It forces you to move with more effort, just like you would in a WOD.

3. Boosts Cardiovascular Fitness

A walk or jog in a weighted vest turns into a conditioning workout. You’ll elevate your heart rate faster, improve stamina, and burn more calories compared to moving without one.

4. Builds Mental Toughness

If you’ve ever done “Murph,” you know that working out in a vest requires extra grit. Training with a weighted vest reminds you to push through discomfort, which carries over into your regular workouts at the gym.

5. Keeps You Consistent

The best fitness routine is the one you stick with. Having a weighted vest at home gives you a no-excuse option for days you can’t make it to class. You’ll still get a workout that challenges you and keeps you progressing toward your goals.

Simple Vest Workout Ideas

  • Weighted vest walk or jog (20–30 minutes)
  • 10 Rounds: 10 push-ups, 15 air squats, 20 walking lunges
  • EMOM (Every Minute on the Minute) for 12 minutes: 5 burpees + 5 sit-ups
  • Max pull-ups or push-ups with vest

CrossFit will always give you the best of coaching, community, and programming—but on the days you can’t make it in, a weighted vest can help keep you on track. It’s a simple, effective way to turn ordinary movements into challenging workouts and make sure you’re still getting stronger, faster, and fitter—anywhere, anytime.
