Thinking about doing the CrossFit Open for the first time?
Take a deep breath — you’re exactly who The Open is for.

Here’s what you need to know before jumping in.


1. You Do Not Need to Be “Ready”

Let’s get this out of the way first.

You don’t need:

  • Heavy weights
  • Advanced skills
  • Years of CrossFit experience

The Open is designed for everyday people, not just elite athletes. Every workout has options so you can participate at your level.

If you’ve been coming to class, you’re ready.


2. You’ll Have Options — Always

Each Open workout includes:

  • Rx
  • Scaled
  • Foundations

Your coach will help you choose the option that makes the most sense for you. There is zero pressure to go Rx. Choosing the right version is a win.


3. You Won’t Be Doing It Alone

One of the best parts of The Open?

  • Coaches watching every rep
  • Members cheering you on
  • High fives and fist bumps everywhere
  • People staying after class just to support you

The energy is different — and it’s contagious.


4. The Goal Is Participation, Not Perfection

This isn’t about the leaderboard.

It’s about:

  • Showing up
  • Trying hard
  • Learning something about yourself
  • Being proud you did something outside your comfort zone

You don’t have to win The Open. You just have to do The Open.


5. Expect to Surprise Yourself

Almost every first-timer says:

“I didn’t think I could do that.”

PRs happen. Movements click. Confidence grows. The Open has a funny way of showing you what you’re capable of — especially when you have support around you.


6. You Can Ask Questions (That’s Encouraged)

Confused? Nervous? Unsure how scoring works?

That’s normal — and expected.

Your coaches will walk you through:

  • The workout
  • Standards
  • Scaling options
  • How to log your score

No question is too small.


7. You Don’t Have to Be Competitive

Some people love the leaderboard.
Some people love the challenge.
Some people just love the vibe.

All of those reasons are valid.

The Open is what you make it.
